Chloranil, also known as tetrachloro-p-benzoquinone, tetrachloroquinone, chloran, etc., has a molecular formula of C6Cl4O2 and a molecular weight of 245.88.
Chloranil precipitated from acetic acid or acetone is a golden yellow crystalline powder, and precipitated from benzene or toluene or obtained by sublimation is a monoclinic yellow columnar crystal.
It has an unpleasant persistent smell and sublimation.
Chloranil is insoluble in water, hardly soluble in cold ethanol, cold petroleum ether, soluble in ether, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and carbon disulfide, and slowly soluble in alkaline solution. When air is present, a reddish brown to purple precipitate (tetrachloro Potassium p-benzoquinone).
